Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine has destroyed large parts of the country's energy infrastructure. In addition to military support for the defense against Russian aggression, Ukraine is in desperate need for additional and urgent support for the energy sector. This week, Norway and Ukraine signed an energy cooperation agreement.
- Norwegian businesses are committed to the recovery and rebuilding of Ukraine, and are eager to take on an active role. President Zelensky has emphasized that Ukraine want a closer cooperation with Norwegian businesses. This is a message the Norwegian government cannot and will not ignore. We will contribute to facilitating a close and constructive cooperation between authorities, businesses, and civil society with Ukraine, says Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth.
The new energy agreement between the Norwegian and Ukrainian Ministries of Energy and was signed by Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth and Ukraine's Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko when they met in Berlin on Monday, June 10.
- The Memorandum of Understanding between Norway and Ukraine covers key areas of the energy sector, such as gas, renewable energy, networks, and the operation of power markets. These are areas where Norway has expertise and a strong business sector, and I am pleased that this can be useful in Ukraine. The agreement will be a good supplement to other efforts, including donations of technical equipment that Norwegian power and grid companies have contributed since 2022, says Minister of Energy Terje Aasland.
The agreement covers a wide range of topics, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and smart digital solutions for the green energy transition and to strengthen energy security.
