SBU, Simons Foundation Receive Inspiring Programs in STEM Award

Honor Presented by Insight Into Diversity Magazine

Stony Brook University and the Simons Foundation have been named a recipient of the Insight Into Diversitymagazine2024 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award, a unique and prestigious national honor for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to access, diversity, and inclusion in STEM fields.

Winners are honored for significantly advancing the core values of DEI through programs and initiatives deserving of this national recognition. Each of the 83 winners will be included in the September STEM issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected by Insight Into Diversity based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.

"We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students," said Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine. "We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond."

In 2022, Stony Brook and the Simons Foundation announced the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program. A $56.6 million initiative, the program provides full financial support for up to 50 exceptional students a year to begin their STEM education at Stony Brook and set them on a PhD/MD pathway. It offers high-achieving students academic and career advising, networking opportunities, stipends for program-related travel and study abroad opportunities, while providing access to some of the leading researchers in the world, including scientists at Stony Brook, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and the Flatiron Institute.

The program recently celebrated the signing of its second cohort of 50 scholars, who will participate in the six-week Summer Bridge Program, an all expenses paid preparation prior to their induction into Stony Brook in the fall. The Summer Bridge helps develop strong academic habits which sets students up for success in college and beyond.

"I take great pride in the dedication and enthusiasm shown by our scholars and staff in initiating this program with such vigor and excellence," said Erwin Cabrera, executive director of the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program. "We are grateful for this recognition and remain dedicated to advancing the legacy we have started. The core values of Insight Into Diversity Inspiring Programs closely resonate with the objectives of the SBU Simons STEM Scholars program, and we appreciate the opportunity to be recognized alongside other distinguished recipients."

"I am so proud of the cutting-edge research, outstanding teaching, and engaged scholarship and service gained from the collaboration of Stony Brook and the Simons Foundation around excellence in STEM," said SBU Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer Judith Brown Clarke. "We look forward to continued partnership in our quest for deep transformational impacts that are powerful and create long-lasting changes that have a positive effect on individuals, communities, and entire societies."

A call for nominations for this award was announced in April 2024.
