California allows 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote before they are eligible to cast their ballot. If a teenager you know will be 18 by Election Day - Nov. 5 - they will be able to vote. Learn more about online preregistration.

The United States will select a new president on Election Daybut voting for the nation's highest office along with dozens of consequential local races actually begins in San Mateo County on Oct. 7.

The Board of Supervisors proclaimed Tuesday, Sept. 17, as National Voter Registration Day.
Nearly 438,000 San Mateo County residents are registered to vote, about 85 percent of the estimated 514,000 who are eligible.
