Nighttime Paving on Oak & Pearl Happening this Week and Next

Repaving has begun on the Oak Street and Pearl Street Pavement Rehabilitation Project. Pearl Street will be repaved this week (June 24-28), and Oak Street is getting repaved next week (June 28-July 3). Paving for both Pearl and Oak will occur at night, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., to reduce impacts to downtown businesses and visitors.

Road users will not see full road closures on either Oak or Pearl, but they should expect single-lane closures. Southbound bicyclists should use High Street or ride in the travel lane on Pearl Street.

Repaving and concrete work-such as sidewalk ramps--is expected to be finished by the end of July. When this project is complete, there will be a smooth road surface, more accessible sidewalk curb ramps, a bike lane on the west side of Pearl Street and shorter pedestrian crossings at several intersections along Oak and Pearl.

Shorter pedestrian crossings are being installed where the City has counted higher numbers of people walking, biking and rolling. Also called bump-outs, the shorter pedestrian crossings extend the sidewalk ramp into the parking lane, decreasing the amount of time people must spend in the street to cross. Bump-outs also tighten the turning radius, requiring drivers to slow down before turning, resulting in a safer transportation system for all road users.

Thank you, voters, for approving the Street Repair Bond Measure that funds this work.
