Chatham County…
Removal of the Old SR 25/Houlihan Bridge at the Savannah River to begin July 22

PORT WENTWORTH - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) and construction partners will close the turn span for the first stages of demolition of the old State Route (SR) 25/Houlihan Bridge over the Savannah River in Port Wentworth.

This week, the new bridge was opened to traffic providing more waterway clearance and wider shoulders designed for more modern passenger and commercial vehicles.

The next stage in construction is the removal of the old truss bridge. For a three-day period, from 12 a.m., Monday, July 22, until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, the bridge at mile marker 21.6 will not be opened and drawbridge operations will cease. Larger vessels that typically require a bridge opening will not be able to pass through upstream. Smaller recreational traffic can move upstream and downstream unaffected.

Travel through this section of the waterway is anticipated to return to normal following the closure. This closure will not impact operations at the adjacent Houlihan Boat Ramp.

Boat operators are advised to stay updated with activities in the area via local coast guard broadcasts, local notices to mariner (LNMs), and marine safety information bulletins (MSIB) regarding impacts while demolition is ongoing.
