Understanding Emphysema

Pulmonologist Howard Waksman, MD

Emphysema is a lung condition that causes shortness of breath that becomes gradually worse over time and can occur during daily activities or even while resting. People with emphysema have a damaged alveoli, which causes old air to become trapped in the lungs, and leaves little room for fresh air to enter. Emphysema is most commonly caused by long-term exposure to airborne irritants, such as tobacco smoke, air pollution, and chemical fumes and dust. Learn more about the risk factors, symptoms, and diagnosis for emphysema from pulmonologist Howard Waksman, MD on the Hurley in the Morning radio show.
