PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 13, 2024) - With winter approaching, Rhode Island residents have a unique opportunity to cut energy costs and prepare their homes for the cold. Rhode Island Energy (RIE) is offering no-cost home energy assessments to help keep homes warmer, bills lower, and energy savings higher this winter.
Customers can book an in-person assessment with an energy specialist by visiting the company's website and requesting an appointment online or calling 1-888-633-7947. During the visit, an energy specialist will evaluate current energy use, suggest simple ways to save, and create a personalized energy efficiency plan. They will also highlight rebates and incentives that could help customers to cover upgrade costs.
"We find that Rhode Islanders who take advantage of a home energy assessment benefit greatly from the experience," said Kate Felder, a consumer advocate at Rhode Island Energy. "It can be an eye-opening experience; one that helps customers make quick and easy adjustments to improve their day-to-day energy usage habits during the winter and provide ideas for other projects in the future."
Residents who take advantage of the program will receive no-cost energy efficient products, such as advanced power strips, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators and programmable thermostats.
Based on the personalized energy efficiency plan they receive from the home energy assessment, homeowners may also receive recommendations for energy efficient heating and cooling equipment, insulation and air sealing, and appliances. The energy specialist will also inform them of rebates and incentives that are available from Rhode Island Energy to help offset the costs of those recommendations. Renters are also eligible for assessments with landlord approval.
For qualified discount rate customers who take advantage of the Home Energy Assessment Program (HEAP), more may be available, including no-cost services such as attic and wall insulation, air sealing and weather stripping. Discount rate customers may also be eligible for no-cost appliance upgrades such as heating systems, refrigerators/freezers, washing machines or dehumidifiers.
"There is so much that all our customers can take advantage of with a no-cost home energy assessment that would be able to save them on energy usage and costs not only during the winter, but also in the years ahead," Felder said. "And it is a win-win situation. Customers can reduce their energy usage and pay less on their monthly bills. Rhode Island Energy benefits by residents putting less strain on the grid, especially during extreme cold weather days in the winter."
