On 22 May, Minister Radosław Sikorski met in Weimar with his counterparts from France and Germany, Stéphane Séjourné and Annalena Baerbock, to discuss how far their declaration has been implemented since its adoption on 12 February 2024 in La Celle-Saint-Cloud and to speak about a number of current topics on the international agenda.
The ministers debated such on-going matters as support for Ukraine and Moldova, preparations for the NATO summit, transatlantic relations, ties with the EU and China, and the situation in the Middle East and Africa. Apart from the current international issues, the discussion focused on European affairs, the upcoming elections for the European Parliament and its new institutional cycle, the EU enlargement process, as well as preparations for the new EU strategic agenda 2024-2029.
The Weimar Triangle top diplomats agreed that the Weimar cooperation to counteract foreign disinformation is excellent and likely to set an example for future EU action. This is particularly important before the European Parliament elections as we now face continuing attempts to spread disinformation.
As for Ukraine, the possibilities of further support were discussed, especially given that the Weimar Triangle states have a special role to play in these efforts. The ministers also addressed the prospects of starting accession negotiations with Ukraine by the end of June. Another subject raised was the situation in Moldova which is experiencing Russia's continued hybrid attacks.
The Weimar meeting's tangible outcome was the adoption of a document with suggested actions to strengthen the geopolitical role of the European Union by the Polish, French, and German ministers.
