In a Federal Register Notice (FRN) published on August 13, 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) proposed a rule that would add performance and labeling requirements for toys that contain button or coin cell batteries.

The proposal would add requirements for performance tests for captive fasteners, threaded fasteners, as well as sequential use and abuse testing.

In addition, this rule would mandate that warning labels follow current standards and include both specific messaging on the hazards of swallowed button or coin cell batteries and warnings to not mix different battery types.

Comments must be submitted by October 15, 2024.
