Water Shortage Watch - Public Notice (Rescinding)

August 27th, 2024
8:15 AM

RE: RESCINDING STAGE 1 WATER SHORTAGE WATCH.

Effective immediately, The City and Borough of Wrangell is rescinding the Stage 1 Water Shortage Watch. This decision comes after a combination of decreased water demand, recent precipitation, and favorable weather forecasts indicating continued rainfall, all of which demonstrate that our water supply and treatment capacity is sufficient.

The Borough's Water Shortage Management Committee (WSMC) will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the stability of our water resources. We appreciate the community's cooperation during the water shortage watch and encourage continued mindful water use.

The City and Borough of Wrangell is issuing a STAGE 1 WATER SHORTAGE WATCH.

The City and Borough of Wrangell is now under a Stage 1 Water Shortage Watch due to both reduced reservoir levels and sustained high water consumption. Although this action is precautionary, our current water capacity and flow conditions meet the criteria for this alert.

The Borough's Water Shortage Management Committee (WSMC) is closely monitoring all factors affecting our water supply. While the long-term forecast indicates significant rainfall, this notice is being issued out of an abundance of caution should the weather predictions not materialize as expected. If the anticipated rainfall occurs, the Stage 1 Water Shortage Watch will likely be lifted.

We will continue to assess our water resources in alignment with our Water Shortage Management Plan. Should conditions change, we will promptly issue an update.

For any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Works Department at (907) 874-3904.

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

The City and Borough of Wrangell is asking all customers to voluntarily conserve water. Small changes made at home can make a big difference when it comes to conserving our water resource.

Water Saving Tips Inside the Home

  •  Turn-off the faucet while washing your hands and brushing your teeth.
  •  When shaving, use a sink filled with rinse water.
  •  Take short showers instead of baths.
  •  Fill the sink with water to wash dishes or to pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
  •  Never use your toilet as a wastebasket.
  •  Repair or replace leaking plumbing pipes and fixtures. If replacing a toilet, consider a low-flow toilet that use 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or less. (Did you know that a leak the size of a pinhole in a home water system can waste more than 4,000 gallons of water per month?)

Water Recycling Tips

  •  Place a bucket in the shower to catch water that is wasted while you adjust your shower water temperature and recycle this water for plants or other watering uses.
  •  Other sources of water that can be recycled easily for other watering purposes include:

- Pet dishes
- Flower vases
- Leftover water from cooking or drinking
- Dehumidifier water

Water Saving Tips Outside the Home

  •  Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways, steps, decks and sidewalks.
  •  Wash the car with water from a bucket. If a hose is used, control the flow with an automatic shut-off nozzle.
  •  Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day and avoid windy days.
  •  Use mulch around shrubs and garden plants to reduce evaporation from the soil surface and cut down on weed growth.
