Suspect Arrested After Hours Long Standoff

Pueblo, CO- On August 27, 2024, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Pueblo Police Department received a call of suspicious activity in the area of the 1200 block of Palmer Avenue.

Officers responded and attempted to contact a male suspect who allegedly menaced parties in the area with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, the suspect refused to exit the residence. After a several-hour standoff, an arrest warrant for the suspect and search warrant for the home were obtained. Due to the proximity to Colombian Elementary, parents/guardians were notified the school was placed on secured perimeter and students were able to be safety released at dismissal.

The Pueblo Police Department SWAT Team responded to the residence along with Crisis Negotiators and Drone Units to manage the unfolding scene. Attempts to gain compliance from the suspect were initially unsuccessful. However, ultimately the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was identified as Samuel Mares, 30. He was arrested on charges of Felony Menacing, Third-Degree Assault, and Criminal Mischief.
