Fire Chief: Eugene's growing wildfire risk

Eugene Springfield Fire is a shared service between the Cities of Eugene and Springfield and crews strive to be prepared for any emergency regardless of location. The threat of wildfires in an era of changing climates is real and rising and, as a result, ESF fire crews respond to fires in outlying areas to prevent them from becoming a threat to the metro area.

As our community has grown and changed, the number of firefighters able to respond to calls has remained practically unchanged, which creates a number of challenges that could affect our response readiness.

Below, Eugene Springfield Fire Chief Mike Caven discusses the risks related to wildfires, and growing needs for firefighters and paramedics to serve the Eugene community.
