Aluminum Association Releases 2024 Edition of Aluminum Standards & Data

October 28, 2024

New Edition Reflects Over 200 Updates to Industry Standards

The Aluminum Association today released the 2024 edition of Aluminum Standards & Data (AS&D), the first update to this essential resource since 2017. Developed through the efforts of industry experts on the association's Technical Committee on Product Standards (TCPS), AS&D is the industry's most authoritative source for aluminum alloy and temper designations, chemical composition limits, mechanical properties and tolerances.

"With the rapid advancements in aluminum technology and applications, it's crucial that our industry has access to the most current and accurate information," said Jerome Fourmann, senior director of metals & minerals at Rio Tinto and chair of TCPS. "The 2024 AS&D edition, along with the updated ANSI H35 series, ensures that aluminum professionals have the resources they need to drive innovation and maintain the highest standards of quality."

The publication incorporates all content from the latest edition of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard H35.2, while also providing additional material on standardization topics, terminology, alloy-temper and product form data, and general guidelines for aluminum semi-fabrication businesses.

Key highlights of the 2024 edition include expanded alloy and temper properties, featuring the addition of 6060-T51 and 6061-T61 tempers. These tempers have long been extruded into wire, rod, bar, profiles, and tubes for various established and novel applications across multiple markets. The new edition also introduces a detailed description of the association's recently developed designation system for aluminum and aluminum alloys in powder form, addressing the growing popularity of powder aluminum in additive manufacturing.

"For 70 years, our standards program has been the bedrock of innovation and quality in the aluminum industry," said Charles Johnson, President & CEO of the Aluminum Association. "This latest edition of AS&D continues this proud tradition, offering invaluable insights that drive progress across aluminum's many markets."

The 2024 AS&D also features expanded tolerance table thickness ranges for several sheet and plate products, and over 200 other updates. These include clarifications of footnotes, definitions of common terminology, integration of pipe tolerances into corresponding product tolerance tables, and corrections to heat treatment procedures for better alignment with ASTM International standards and the SAE International's Aerospace Material Specifications.

Concurrently, the Aluminum Association has published new editions of the ANSI H35 standards series. This includes the revised ANSI H35.1 (including metric), H35.2, and H35.2(M), as well as the reaffirmed ANSI H35.3, H35.4, and H35.5. These standards provide the framework for aluminum alloy designations, chemical compositions, dimensional tolerances, aluminum hardener designations, unalloyed (primary) aluminum designations, and the nomenclature of aluminum metal matrix composite materials.

The 2024 editions of Aluminum Standards & Data (AS&D) and the new ANSI H35 series standards are now available for purchase, offering invaluable resources for professionals across the aluminum industry. Visit www.aluminum.org/bookstore to learn more.
