Controller Cohen Responds to Enactment of the 2024-2025 Budget

SACRAMENTO - California State Controller Malia M. Cohen today issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom signing the 2024-2025 budget:

"The Budget Act of 2024 is a balanced budget that closes a $45 billion shortfall. I am cautiously optimistic that it will continue to provide core programs and services to most Californians. However, its impact on economically disadvantaged communities is yet to be determined."

"As the state's chief fiscal officer, I commend Governor Newsom and the Legislature for including tools in this budget that would further protect the fiscal integrity of the budget in future years. I look forward to providing California taxpayers and the Governor and the Legislature critical audit services to ensure that the money appropriated is used for its intended purpose."

As the chief fiscal officer of California, Controller Cohen is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state's financial resources. The Controller has independent auditing authority over government agencies that spend state funds.
