Faculty exhibition opens Wednesday, continues through September 19

KOKOMO, Ind. - Artwork created by six Indiana University Kokomo New Media, Art and Technology faculty will be featured in the first Art Gallery exhibit of the academic year.

The Faculty Biennial Exhibition opens Wednesday, August 21, and continues through Thursday, September 19 in the Gallery. It features work by Minda Douglas, associate professor of fine arts; Michael Glassburn, adjunct faculty member; Tarja Harney, adjunct faculty member; Michael Koerner, associate professor of new media; Aaron Pickens, assistant professor of new media; and Gregory Steel, professor of fine arts and new media.

Meet the artists and learn more about their work at a free reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 4 in the Gallery, in the IU Kokomo Library Building, 2300 S. Washington St. Admission and parking are free.

The exhibition will close with a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, with Douglas and Pickens discussing their work.

Glassburn, a videographer, showcases his experience of the April 2024 total solar eclipse in his short film, INdiana: The Path of Totality.

"I wanted to show the experience in the only way I know how, with too many cameras," said Glassburn, also an IU Kokomo alumnus. "I have multicam sequences, drone footage, point of view shots with a GoPro attached to me, and a 360-degree camera for another unique look."

He hopes viewers will see what can be done with cameras, and share his perspective of the excitement of the day.

"I wanted to show what the experience was like, not just seeing the eclipse, but feeling it," he said. "Feeling the emotions between myself and family as we experience a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

The exhibition also includes documentation of a mural commission by Koerner for the Kokomo City Line Trolley, plein air landscapes created by Pickens, a collaborative piece created by Douglas with recent graduate Abby Carman, mixed media lithographs by Harney, and sculptures by Steel.

The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
