Just days after launching its Public Safety Camera Network, the Sacramento Police Department successfully used the new technology to arrest suspects involved in a robbery in Old Sacramento.
Officers on Oct. 25 were alerted by a 13-year-old victim regarding a robbery that had just taken place. By accessing the network, officers identified the suspects' clothing and located them fleeing the scene. Three juveniles and three adults were arrested on various charges.
"We're incredibly grateful for the hard work of our officers and the technology that helped hold these suspects accountable," said Sergeant Dan Wiseman of the Sacramento Police Department. "This case is a prime example of how technology like the Public Safety Camera Network can have an immediate impact on our community's safety."
About the Public Safety Camera Network
The Public Safety Camera Network, launched Oct. 23, integrates public and private camera feeds with tools such as 911 and dispatch integration, officer geolocation, and public tips reporting.
Designed to boost the efficiency of the department's Real Time Information Center (RTIC), the network allows property owners to voluntarily register security cameras. This process aids officers in locating video evidence more quickly, often eliminating the need for door-to-door canvassing and expediting emergency responses.
The Department emphasizes that registered cameras remain private, only revealing location information during investigations or emergencies. Live access to video feeds is not included in the program, though residents and business owners have the option to upgrade systems for live video sharing in cases of emergency response.
The Sacramento Police Department encourages residential and commercial property owners to consider registering their security cameras, further strengthening community-police collaboration.
