On August 23, 2024, the Honorable James Arguelles sentenced Sean Currenton to 19 years in prison. On August 22, 2023, a jury convicted Currenton of domestic violence and dissuading a witness by force or threat. The Court also found true allegations that Currenton committed a felony while out on bail and that he has a prior strike conviction for dissuading a witness from reporting a crime. The Court also found true aggravating factors that the victim was particularly vulnerable, his prior convictions are numerous or of increasing seriousness and that he served a prior term in prison or county jail.
The victim was living in another country when she met Currenton through social media. After Currenton convinced the victim to marry him and move to the United States, Currenton became violent with her. On September 14, 2022, Currenton and the victim were in the car when he got upset and began hitting her and threatening to kill her. When the car stopped, the victim exited and ran to a nearby restaurant where a witness called 911. Currenton was arrested a few days later and charged. As Currenton was out of custody awaiting his preliminary hearing, he told the victim he will kill her if she tells truth about the September incident. The victim was afraid but called 911 the next morning and Currenton was arrested and charged with a second case. Those cases were consolidated.
