President Hideo Ohno Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Warsaw

Tohoku University President Hideo Ohno has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Warsaw for his research in the fields of spintronics and semiconductors.

The ceremony was held on November 13 at Kazimierzowski Palace on the University of Warsaw's main campus. Rector Alojzy Z. Nowak presented the award.

In his speech, President Ohno reflected on his work and expressed his gratitude to the University of Warsaw researchers with whom he has conducted joint research. He also thanked his family and the many colleagues and students who have supported him throughout his career.

Looking ahead, President Ohno spoke of the need for more international collaborations - especially with partners such as the University of Warsaw - in order to address global challenges. He added that Tohoku University is currently the only candidate on Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology'sshortlist to be a "University for International Research Excellence," an accreditation that would further boost the university's research and collaborative capabilities.

In conjunction with the ceremony, a workshop for spintronics, Japanese studies and international law was jointly hosted by Tohoku University, the University of Warsaw and the Polish Academy of Sciences on November 13 and 14.

Tohoku University was represented by Professor Shunsuke Fukami, Director of the Center for Science and Innovation in Spintronics; Prof. Toshiaki Kimura, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Letters; Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki; and Prof. Hidenori Tozawa, Dean of the Graduate School of Law.

More than 30 researchers and students from both universities participated, presenting their research, and engaging in fruitful discussions through lively question-and-answer sessions.
