Garden Grove Celebrates Opening of First Of Its Kind Police Canine Training Facility

Yesterday, the City of Garden Grove and the Garden Grove Police Department held a ribbon cutting for the Garden Grove Police Canine Training Facility, a first-of-its-kind in Orange County. A two-year pilot program, the Garden Grove Police Canine Training Facility will provide field training for apprehension dogs as well as support canines for law enforcement agencies in Orange County. The training field is located in Pioneer Park, north of Warren Elementary School, at 12722 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove.

At the ribbon cutting, Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones thanked community partners such as the Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD), for the successful completion of the regional Garden Grove Police Canine Training Facility, including nearby residents.

"Our valued collaboration with GGUSD has been crucial in establishing this pilot program in Pioneer Park. The John Reynolds Youth Support Canine Foundation, local businesses, and others, coming together to provide needed program funding. The Orange County Carpenter's Union giving their valuable time to build the training equipment. And our surrounding residents who attended neighborhood meetings to express their overwhelming support."

In October 2023, the Garden Grove Police Department identified the need to create a centrally-located regional police canine training facility. In January 2024, the Garden Grove City Council voted unanimously to explore the feasibility of establishing a police canine training facility in Pioneer Park. In May 2024, the Garden Grove City Council approved an MOU with the Garden Grove Unified School District for the establishment of the facility in Pioneer Park.

The Garden Grove Police Canine Training Facility equipment includes: high finder ladder in a tree, K-9 bridge, K-9 tunnel, K-9 hill climb, K-9 see-saw, K-9 hurdle, and two K-9 schutzhund blinds.
