OAS General Assembly in Asunción: Foreign Minister Mondino began her activities leading the Argentine delegation

Foreign Minister Diana Mondino arrived today at Asunción, Paraguay, to lead the Argentine Delegation to the 54th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) taking place in that city until Friday 28 June, and to hold bilateral meetings with her from the region.

On the sidelines of the preparatory meetings, Foreign Minister Mondino met with her designated counterpart of Panama, Javier Martínez-Acha, whom she congratulated on the recent presidential elections in his country. In addition, she highlighted "the opportunity that represents the beginning of the new administration to give new impetus to the bilateral relationship", which turned a hundred years in 2020 and has been characterized by cooperation and mutual solidarity.

The Minister also expressed interest in working together at the regional and international level to "promote shared policies on democracy, individual freedoms and free trade," and Argentine interest in increasing bilateral trade.

After reviewing regional issues, Foreign Minister-designate Martínez-Acha expressed his interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation. Both officials agreed on their mutual interest in deepening the relationship on economic-commercial matters, education, security and the fight against drug trafficking, among others.

Later, also on the sidelines of the 54th General Assembly, Argentina's top diplomat met with the Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the White House National Security Council, Dan Erikson. Mondino referred to the economic-financial situation in our country, in particular the measures adopted by the national government regarding deregulation and trade liberalization, as well as trade negotiations with other states and blocs, and renewed the firm intention to expand the trade and investment agenda. Both also analyzed the state of different regional and international issues, including multilateral forums.

The Foreign Minister maintained that "Argentina promotes a strategic alliance with the United States for the promotion of development, democracy and freedom, based on shared values," and in this sense she highlighted the recent Framework Agreement signed by both countries for the Establishment of a High Level Strategic Dialogue.

The Minister reiterated Argentina's great interest in achieving membership in the OECD and the status of Global Partner of NATO, under the direction of President Milei, and in being thus part of an organization that promotes an international stable order to safeguard peace and security.

With her counterpart from Granada, Joseph Andall, the Argentine Foreign Minister recalled that this year marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between both countries, that it is also Granada's 50th anniversary of independence, and that our country was one one of the first to recognize this new political status. Both Ministers agreed to continue expanding cooperation projects on education and student exchanges, health, agriculture sector, soil and water resources.

Mondino also held a meeting with Argentine members of different faiths, Catholic priest Guillermo Marcó, Rabbi Daniel Goldman and the Islamic leader Omar Abhmed Abboud, who work on interreligious dialogue and have been appointed "ambassadors for peace" by the OAS.

In the afternoon, the Argentine Ministers attended the Opening Session of the OAS 54th General Assembly and subsequent reception at the headquarters of the Central Bank of Paraguay, offered by the President of the Republic of Paraguay, Santiago Peña.
