ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting in north Edmonton

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating following an officer-involved shooting in the Fraser neighbourhood yesterday evening.

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, at approximately 9:24 p.m., Northeast Branch patrol officers were dispatched to the area of 153 Avenue and Anthony Henday Drive for a reported single vehicle roll over collision involving an impaired driver. It was reported to police by witnesses that the male driver of the vehicle had fled the collision scene on foot. A confrontation then took place, and an officer discharged their firearm, striking the man.

EMS responded, treated and transported the 28-year-old male to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He has since succumbed to his injuries.

No other civilians or EPS officers were injured during this incident.

The man had not been detained by police at the time of the shooting.

A 46.1 notification has since been provided to the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement, who has directed ASIRT to conduct an investigation into this officer-involved shooting.

As such, the EPS cannot provide any additional information at this time. All further media inquiries should be directed to ASIRT.
