ZooAmerica Announces Gray Wolf as October 2024 Animal of The Month

The Zoo in Hershey is home to three gray wolves

ZooAmericaNorth American Wildlife Park recognizes different North American Animals monthly for guest educational opportunities and interactive activities. The October Animal Of The Month is the Gray Wolf.

The ZooAmerica team cares for three Gray Wolves in the Northlands regionof the Zoo. The male wolf, Twister, was born on April 30, 2015, at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. The females, Hazel and Freya, were born on April 4, 2019. They arrived at ZooAmerica from Bear Country USA in Rapid City, South Dakota.

When visiting, guests can easily distinguish the male from the two females based on their fur color. Contrary to their name, gray wolves, like the ones at ZooAmerica, can range from white to shades of gray, brown and black. Nine-year-old Twister is light in color, while five-year-old sisters Hazel and Freya have very dark fur.

Freya is the smallest wolf in the pack. She has a playful personality and the most unique howl. However, she is more shy than her sister. Hazel, on the other hand, is quite bold and always the first to interact with her enrichment activities. Twister likes to be in charge when it comes to food but can be more timid with new opportunities. He often lets Hazel take the lead, which helps to build his confidence.

The wolves are much more active in cooler temperatures, so now is a great time to plan a visit to ZooAmerica to see them. ZooAmerica is open daily(closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day) from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours on select weekends in October for Creatures Of The Night.

Every Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. this month, guests can meet one of the Zoo Educators at the Wolf Habitat to learn more about the canid trio. Plus, visitors can enter to win* a stuffed wolf plushie in the Admissions area before they leave!

Regular admissionto ZooAmerica for guests ages 9-61 is $16.50 plus taxes and fees. Juniors and seniors are $14.50 plus taxes and fees. Children 2 and younger are free. ZooAmerica is included in the one-price admission to Hersheyparkwhen entering the Zoo from the bridge inside Hersheypark during posted Park hours. Please note that ZooAmerica and Hersheypark hours vary.
