Massport Plans Upgrades for Two Logan Express Locations

BOSTON - To improve the customer experience for riders in the North Shore and Metro West, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is moving the Peabody Logan Express (LEX) to a permanent location in Danvers and adding three levels to the existing Framingham LEX Garage. The Framingham and Peabody LEX services carried more than 750,000 riders combined in 2023, and both saw ridership exceed 2019 numbers.

Massport will relocate the current Peabody LEX from the Northshore Mall to the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers, commencing operations as Danvers Logan Express on August 6th. This new, permanent site will more than double the parking capacity, with the same convenience for area residents. Centrally located just off Route 128, the new site is easily reached by Route 1 and I-95, benefitting residents throughout the North Shore.

"We are excited to welcome Logan Express to Danvers," said Town Manager Steve Bartha. "This service will make getting to and from Logan Airport incredibly easy for residents of Danvers, along with all our surrounding communities."

This past year, the LEX system carried a record 2.3 million customers, nearly doubling ridership over the past decade. The LEX network currently offers service at five locations, including Framingham, Woburn, Braintree, Peabody at the Northshore Mall and Boston's Back Bay.

In Framingham, the optimization project will add approximately 1,000 spaces to the existing garage, allowing Massport to further grow the service and to increase service frequencies from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes in the future. Construction at the Framingham LEX site is expected to begin this fall, and be completed by the winter of 2025-2026.

"The Massport Logan Express service is an essential service for our region, and shuttles thousands of people to Logan who want to avoid parking, get right to their terminal, or just be able to relax or get work done on their way to and from the airport," said Senate President Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland). "The improvements that Massport is making to the Framingham Logan Express site will improve that experience for our region's travelers, and I look forward to seeing it move forward."

Massport will also add sustainable features to the Framingham LEX site, such as solar panels and EV charging stations.

"We appreciate Massport's dedication to creating a more customer friendly experience for local travelers interested in using the Framingham Logan Express," said City of Framingham Mayor Charlie Sisitsky. "The community will only continue to benefit from the enhancements to the LEX service and overall site improvements."

So far this year, approximately one in five Boston Logan passengers chose HOV modes such as Logan Express, the MBTA's Silver Line and Blue line, and private bus service to get to and from the airport. Massport's long-term goal is to grow LEX ridership to four million passengers annually, and to encourage more passengers to choose HOV modes. Massport has implemented several initiatives in recent years to support this;
• Passengers can purchase LEX e-tickets in advance from our website and the FlyLogan app for a reduced price of $9 each way, and the Back Bay service fare which is priced at only $3 to the airport and is free departing from Boston Logan;
• The MBTA Silver Line 1 (SL1) served around 1.5 million Boston Logan riders in 2023. Last year, Massport purchased 10 new enhanced electric SL1 buses that operate with zero emissions through the airport's terminal areas and will allow increased service;
• Both the Back Bay Logan Express and MBTA Silver Line SL1 services from Boston Logan to the city are FREE. Massport provided approximately 1 million free rides from Logan Airport in 2023; and
• In 2023, over 2.2 million riders boarded the MBTA Blue Line at Airport Station. Massport added real time shuttle bus tracking for Blue Line passengers, began a new shuttle route from Airport Station directly to the terminals, and partnered with the MBTA to improve Airport Station wayfinding.
