DHRP grants available for historic downtown buildings

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Applications are now open for the Muscatine Downtown Historic Revitalization Program (DHRP). Grants are available for properties in the Downtown Historic District that are either listed on the National Register of Historic Places or as contributing to the Historic District.

The priority of the DHRP is to support the revitalization of Muscatine through the redevelopment of downtown commercial properties. Eligible property may receive $10,000 to $100,000 for exterior repairs and restoration in accordance with the Secretary of Interior's Design Standards. To facilitate this, each property owner will be provided architectural design services up to 20 percent of the grant award.

The City of Muscatine received one of 13 grants awarded nationwide under the 2023 Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Subgrant Program (HRSP) through the National Parks Service. The City was awarded $747,148 for at least one round of subgrants for the rehabilitation and revitalization of the downtown commercial area.

This program furthers the City's efforts to bring life back to our historical buildings, retaining the cultural heritage, and attract locals and visitors alike to downtown. Historic downtowns and commercial districts are the heart of many communities across Iowa, providing a sense of place and character that sets them apart from each other.
