A Musical Celebration of Lafayette on Sunday, November 24
Don't miss this opportunity to experience A Musical Celebration of Lafayette on Sunday, November 24, at 3 p.m. at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum, 201 S. Washington Street. This special concert commemorates the 200th anniversary of Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Alexandria.
In 1824, Revolutionary War hero Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, visited the United States of America for a Grand Tour of all 24 states. For 13 months, Americans across the country celebrated Lafayette with ceremonies, balls, dignitary visits, parades, and concerts. The sounds of military wind bands greeted the Hero of Two Worlds nearly everywhere he went. On this special occasion, the period-instrument wind band Music of the Regiment will recreate the soundscape of Lafayette's era.
The program will feature works by Francis Johnson, as well as pieces credited to anonymous women under the alias "A Lady…," and other period works. Audiences will experience grand marches, lively dance tunes, and America's earliest patriotic airs performed on the instruments of the early 19th century.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at Alexandriava.gov/Shop.
