State Department of Transportation to Host Open House on Contract Four of the I-81 Viaduct Project, Focusing on the Construction of the Community Grid on the Eastside of the City of Syracuse

September 26 Meeting to Highlight New Interchange at Crouse Avenue, the Reconstruction of City Streets, Safety and Access Enhancements, Construction Schedule, and Environmental Commitments

The New York State Department of Transportation will host an open house on Thursday, September 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. pertaining to construction on Interstate 690, Crouse and Irving Avenues, and several streets on the eastside in the City of Syracuse as part of contract four of the I-81 Viaduct Project.

The informal, open-house-style meeting will be held at the Central New York Biotech Accelerator, Upstate Medical University, 841 East Fayette Street, in Syracuse. Project renderings will be available for review and NYSDOT representatives, along with the Prime Contractor, who will be available to answer questions. No formal presentation is planned.

Contract four of the I-81 Viaduct Project includes the realignment of I-690 to accommodate a new interchange from Crouse Avenue to I-690. The contract will also reconstruct Crouse and Irving Avenues, reconfiguring both streets from two to three lanes, reconstruct and resurface portions of seven additional city streets, and replace two bridges on I-690, over Lodi Street and Crouse Avenue, to align with the interstate. Work within contract four also includes the start of major upgrades to Syracuse's and Onondaga County's drainage system, separating storm water and sanitary sewer flow. Additional contract features include new traffic video detection signals, designated bike lanes, shared use paths, new sidewalks and crosswalks with pedestrian poles, and the installation of noise barriers along I-690.

The purpose of the I-81 Viaduct Project is to address the structural deficiencies and non-standard highway features of the 1.4-mile elevated structure in downtown Syracuse, while creating an improved corridor through the city of Syracuse that meets transportation needs and provides infrastructure to support long-range planning efforts.

This open house is part of NYSDOT's ongoing commitment to public engagement and communication in the construction of transportation projects.

The CNY Biotech Accelerator, Upstate Medical University is accessible to people with disabilities. Please contact TeNesha Murphy at 315-728-4251 if a sign language interpreter, assisted listening system, or other accommodation will be required to facilitate your participation in the open house.
