Green Transportation Initiatives for a Sustainable Supply Chain

Finding the most effective strategies for sustainable logistics

For many businesses, transportation is one of the biggest contributors to their environmental impact. Additionally, these supply chain (Scope 3) emissions can be one of the most challenging areas to decarbonize. This is due to the many players involved, each with their own carbon footprint and diverse approaches to measurement, reporting and mitigation.

The journey toward sustainability is complex, so understanding the effectiveness of different green transportation initiatives is pivotal to working toward real change. As an integrated logistics provider, ArcBest is committed to exploring sustainable solutions that meet the customer's sustainability and financial goals.

Possible hurdles in sustainable transportation practices

Fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from trucks present significant challenges when working towards a more sustainable future. While these issues are complex, there are many innovative approaches to improving sustainability within the transportation industry. As these transportation practices become more widespread, it's important to find a logistics partner who can navigate the current obstacles.

Embracing alternatives fuels

Alternative fuels are increasingly considered for reducing transportation's environmental impact. While their use in local deliveries is already showing positive results, extending these benefits to regional and national shipments requires overcoming challenges related to availability and cost. The industry's commitment to developing solutions in these areas offers hope for broader adoption in the future.

Overcoming biodiesel barriers

Biodiesel is a viable option for reducing emissions, with many modern trucks already capable of running on this fuel. Although it has some challenges, like reduced performance in cold weather and potential maintenance and warranty issues, many companies are trying to find ways to utilize biodiesel when possible.

Leveraging rail transport

Rail transport's efficiency makes it an attractive option for reducing emissions. Although there are limits on its use, particularly concerning rail mile contracts and network availability, integrating rail with other modes of transportation can still yield sustainability benefits. With the right strategies, these challenges can be managed to maximize the positive impact of rail transport.

Adopting electric vehicles (EVs)

Electric vehicles are an exciting development in commercial transportation, with the potential to significantly reduce emissions. While current battery technology and infrastructure pose challenges for long-haul applications, ongoing innovations are likely to improve EV performance and make them a more practical choice for a broader range of shipments in the future.

Our approach to transportation sustainability

For ArcBest, sustainability is a priority across our teams and in how we operate. When it comes to improving environmental sustainability, we're making many meaningful strides:

  • Electric yard tractors: Where applicable, we are utilizing electric yard tractors, which can easily be charged when not in use, helping to maintain battery life and reduce overall emissions.

  • Renewable diesel: This biogenic fuel is chemically identical to traditional diesel, works with existing equipment and results in very little CO2 gain. Although it is not yet widely available, we currently use it in our bulk fueling station in California and expect availability to increase as production ramps up.

  • LTL and EV piloting: Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping is often considered a more environmentally friendly shipping solution, and it's particularly well-suited for EVs. The extra battery weight required for an EV pairs well with LTL shipments, which typically fill space before hitting their weight limit. We're piloting electric trucks for LTL operations that can take advantage of this synergy.

  • Data-driven truck placement: We use data to maintain and rotate trucks to optimal locations, ensuring maximum efficiency and minimal emissions. This includes strategic decisions on when to purchase new equipment and when to transition trucks from long-haul to city use.

  • Advanced route planning: Our route planning technology helps us create the most operationally efficient routes to reduce emissions.

  • Sustainable campuses and facilities: Our campuses and facilities are designed to reduce our environmental impact. From the energy-efficient design and materials used in our headquarters to ongoing enhancements at our service centers, we prioritize energy and utility efficiency, ensuring that our growth aligns with our commitment to sustainability.
