The Borussia Dortmund U19s made a successful start to the second half of Group C in the DFB-Nachwuchsliga, winning 1-0 away to Rot-Weiss Essen to claim their eighth victory in succession and completing a successful dress rehearsal prior to their first UEFA Youth League home game against Celtic on Tuesday (16:00 CEST).

Nick Cherny scored the goal of the game in the 57th minute. Despite a significantly improved performance in the second period, BVB could not extend their margin of victory. "Overall, we controlled the match and played outstanding football with our young team after the changes," said Mike Tullberg in praise of his players.

He had to experiment on the personnel front once again at the Bezirkssportanlage on Seumannstraße. The 16-year-old Luca Reggiani was drafted into the starting line-up to stabilise the back three, as William Rashidi and Anas Mahjoubi are sidelined with injury. Tim Degener also made his debut in the first XI, as Mussa Kaba was initially rested and included among the substitutes.

The squad was bolstered by U17 players Jan Luca Riedl and Justin Hoy, who came on as substitutes in the second period. "The way Luca Riedl performed at 15 years of age deserves great respect," explained Tullberg, who additionally singled out the remarkable performance of Diego Ngambia in a wide attacking role.

The home team, who are having a decent season, began courageously in the pouring rain and countered Borussia's footballing superiority with a five-man defence, tough tackling and great commitment. They even had the opportunity to take the lead in the 30th minute, but Essen's Evagelos Karatzidis could not convert for the opposition from a promising position.

BVB might have dominated this clash, but there were no clear-cut chances to begin with. Reggiani failed to beat the RWE custodian with a header in the first period (21) and Samuele Inacio missed from an unmarked position (53). In the 57th minute, the Black & Yellows got their reward for clearly upping the tempo in the second period. Nick Cherny scored the overdue opening goal with an unstoppable shot. It was all one-way traffic after that: the Black & Yellows spurned several high-quality chances, with the woodwork also sparing Essen a greater margin of defeat.

The DFB-Nachwuchsliga will now pause for the international break. Mussa Kaba and U17 goalkeeper Jan-Mattis Wehrbein have been called up by Mac Meister for the U17 national team, which will compete against Andorra, Belarus and Czechia in the first European Championship qualification tournament in Frankfurt from 9 to 15 October.

The Nachwuchsliga campaign will continue with the derby against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday 19 October. Kick-off is at 11:00 CEST at the Youth Performance Centre.
