STL Board visit to Lucinda & Townsville BST

The STL Board, consistent with its objective of visiting every Terminal at least once every two years made a 2 day visit to the Lucinda and Townsville Terminals in early August. These visits corresponded with a meeting of the Safety, Risk & Sustainability Committee along with a full Board Meeting, so visiting the terminals provided a useful overview for many of the items discussed in the subsequent meetings. Directors always comment on the value of such visits, and we thank all involved in making it such a constructive session.

Major Railway Maintenance in Townsville

The rail line is the lifeblood of the Townsville terminal, transporting 1.2 million tonnes of raw sugar to the Receiving Station every year via "heavy rail" locomotives and wagons. Over many years, the concrete surrounding the railway line had suffered extensive cracking, and degradation of the grout bed under the rails was causing the rails to "pump" when trains passed over the degraded area. This had the potential to cause a rail fracture and train derailment. The railway line and turnouts on the entry and exit sides of the Receiving Station were rehabilitated during the off-season by removing the surrounding concrete, rails and grout, reinstating the grout bed, reinstalling the rails and replacing the surrounding concrete. The critical railway work was performed by a leading rail engineering, construction and maintenance company, supported by a number of local contractors. STL provide capital funding of just under $500,000 for this major project, which was completed successfully prior to the start of the 2024 season.

Upgrade to Bundaberg Shipping Conveyor

The reliability and utilisation of the shipping assets at the Bundaberg terminal remain a property for the business. To ensure the ongoing reliability of the shipping conveyor stream, an upgrade of the wharf conveyor C7 was included in the FY24 budget, with funding to replace the motor, gearbox, couplings, and PLC cabinet. A Variable Speed Drive was also installed to improve energy efficiency and the conveyor's flexibility to handle a variety of products. All in all, STL invested around $335,000 in this project. The "heavy lifting" to replace the equipment was completed in a scheduled 7-day shutdown in May and the project was completed successfully in mid-June.

STL CEO visits Macknade Mill

Understanding STL's role in the supply chain is often assisted by visits to Mills and farms to gain appreciation of the challenges facing those businesses. The STL CEO took the opportunity during a recent visit into North Queensland to visit the Macknade Mill which was in full operation on the day he visited noting some of the weather and other factors that have made the 2024 crush to date somewhat challenging. Thank you to the Mill Team for providing this opportunity.
