Led by Mason Cigrand and Timothy Swenka, the Cougars won three of their five matches this week.

The Cougars' Esports season rolled on this week with matchups against St. Louis Community College (CC), Marshalltown CC, Coastal Bend College, Blinn College and Union College on the schedule.

NICC athlete Mason Cigrand started the week with a 3-1 win over Marshalltown in Hearthstone. Some experience with the in-game decks elevated Cigrand above his competition.

"Mason practices with these decks," Head Coach Verrick Foust said, "and that really shows in these games. He won his three games back-to-back."

Timothy Swenka then represented the Cougars in two Super Smash Bros. Ultimate games. He split his matches on the week, losing 3-0 to St. Louis but defeating Coastal Bend 3-2.

"We had some control issues in game one that carried over," Foust said. "We switched over in the last games, and our results showed what we can do. In our second match, Timothy came back from a 2-0 deficit and won the last three games to secure the win."

On Wednesday night, the Cougars zoned in on Overwatch 2, tiers one and two.

The team of Swenka, Cigrand, Wesley Miller, Mason Caldwell and Anthony Smith won their tier one match 3-2.

"The first two weeks," Foust said, "we're trying to find how we best fit with our new players. In this game, we did a switch-up, which really worked for us."

The NICC squad of Dakota Hamann, Hunter Fosdal, Cole Hawkins, Laneļ¾ Folstad and Miller wrapped up the Cougars' week with a 3-1 loss in tier two to Blinn College.

The Cougars' Esports team has five matches scheduled for next week. Stay up to date on all Esports happenings at nicc.edu/esports.
