Police Investigating Theft of Statue in University District

Seattle Police are investigating the theft of the Sadako Sasaki statue in the University District last week.

On July 12th at 1130 a.m., officers received a report that the statue of 'Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes' was stolen from Peace Park in the 800 block of Northeast 40th Street.

No suspect(s) have been identified or arrested at this time.

The statue is a life size bronze of Sadako Sasaki, a young Japanese girl who survived the Hiroshima bombing but later died from radiation sickness at age 12.

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture has valued the statue at approximately $25,000.

This case has been assigned to the General Investigations Unit.
