August marks the beginning of National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a time to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. This annual observance is a reminder that vaccines are a critical public health tool in preventing serious, sometimes life-threatening diseases. The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) is proud to join healthcare providers, public health officials, and communities nationwide in raising awareness about the vital role immunizations play in keeping our Denver community healthy.
Now is a good time for Denver residents to check the status of routine immunizations. If you don't know where to start, head to the Colorado Immunization Information System for your immunization records. If you're behind on routine vaccines, contact your healthcare provider and get caught up. Current vaccines protect not only you, but our entire Denver community, especially those with compromised or weakened immune systems.
Why Stay Up-To-Date on Vaccinations?
Vaccines help your body create protective antibodies-proteins that help it fight off infections. By getting vaccinated, you can protect yourself and your loved ones, and also avoid spreading preventable diseases to other people in your community. Vaccines have significantly reduced the incidence of many infectious diseases, such as measles, mumps, polio, and influenza. Immunization not only protects the person receiving the vaccine but also helps prevent the spread of disease to others, especially those who are most vulnerable, such as infants, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
