UW Cowboys Keep Winning; Cowgirls Second at Sheridan Rodeo

Three rodeos, three wins for the University of Wyoming men's team, while the Cowgirls were the runners-up for the second time during that span.

The results from the weekend Sheridan College rodeo kept the Cowboys firmly atop the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) standings, while the UW women are solidly entrenched in second place with just two rodeos remaining on the fall schedule.

The Cowboys outpointed second-place Casper College in a close finish by just 10 points in piling up 565 points, while third went to Gillette College at 510. The UW men have been on a CRMR tear through the fall season and now have 1,560 points, while the T-Birds are second with 1,310 and the Gillette College Pronghorns are third at 1,045.

The Pronghorns took the women's competition at Sheridan with 505 points, winning for the second time in three outings. Second went to the Cowgirls, who were 120 points behind the front-runners. The Gillette College women have 1,428.3 points through three rodeos, while the Cowgirls have 1,153.3. A distant third is Chadron State College with 415 points.

At Sheridan College, UW relied on its depth among the points team to take the title.

-- Jacob Wang, from Baker, Mont., was the top points producer for the Cowboys this weekend, winning both rounds of steer wrestling to take the average.

-- Colton Farrow, of Greybull, placed among the top two for the third straight rodeo in bareback riding, where he was second in the average.

-- Bodie Mattson, from Sturgis, S.D., won the opening round of tie down roping and wound up fifth in the average. He later returned with teammate Troupe Coors, of Loveland, Colo., to win the opening round of team roping. They finished fourth in the overall average.

-- Dixon Tattrie, of Youngstown, Alberta, Canada, scored points in saddle bronc riding, finishing fourth in the average.

-- Rio Nutter, from Rapid City, S.D., and teammate Coy Johnson, from Gillette, scored points in team roping, but they did not place in the average.

Other UW Cowboys, not on the selected six-man points team, also placed at Sheridan last weekend. Jackson's Emmit Ross won the bull riding competition. Thayne Kimbrough, from Ohiowa, Neb., came through to place second in the steer wrestling average, while teammate Rhett Witt, from Valentine, Neb., finished fifth. Witt also was the tie down roping runner-up. Kimbrough combined with Laramie County Community College's (LCCC) Shelby Derner to place second in team roping.

The Cowgirls were steady during the weekend rodeo, with all four points team members scoring points.

-- Landry Haugen, of Sturgis, led the Cowgirls in scoring when she combined with partner Dalton Porch, of Gillette College, to place third in the team roping average. Haugen completed her weekend by placing sixth in the goat tying average.

-- Riata Day, from Fleming, Colo., split the goat tying runner-up position with teammate Josie Mousel, of Egan, S.D.

-- Wheatland's Rayne Grant rounded out the scoring by placing fourth in the barrel racing average.

Other UW Cowgirls, not on the selected four-woman points team, also placed at Sheridan last weekend. Thermopolis' Emme Norsworthy had her best performance in barrel racing, placing second in the average. Also taking second in her event was Cheyenne's Jordyn McNamee in breakaway roping. In the same event, Caysen Gran, from Kennebec, S.D., was fifth overall.

"I'm very proud of how our students competed. We capitalized on most of our opportunities Sunday," says UW Coach Seth Glause. "We need to continue to perform at a high level to close out the fall season."

No rodeo is scheduled this weekend, with the next CRMR competition scheduled Friday-Sunday, Oct. 11-13, for LCCC's annual Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo in Cheyenne.
