Meet Katie Slamer, Texas A&M University-Texarkana alumna and the University Police Department's newest full-time police officer. A 2024 graduate with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Katie was already working for the university as a police cadet, and enrolled at the police academy immediately after graduating. She graduated from the academy on October 10, 2024, and was sworn into service as a police officer 5 days later. While at the academy she won the Top Gun award for having the highest marksmanship scores in her class.
A native of Rancho Cucamonga in southern California, Slamer arrived at A&M-Texarkana in the fall of 2019 as a freshman member of the university's softball team where she patrolled center field for four years. Katie is in the top five of numerous offensive categories for a single season, but it's her career statistics that dominate the Eagles record book. For her career Katie holds the records for games played (134), batting average (0.363), at bats (416), runs scored (114), hits (151), doubles (30), triples (26), walks (33), stolen bases (56) and RBI (76).
Katie was recruited following a softball showcase in Plano, Texas and fell in love with the A&M-Texarkana campus. As an avid outdoorsperson who enjoys hunting and fishing, the east Texas area was a perfect fit. Her favorite thing about the university, though, was the small class sizes where she could enjoy more individual attention from her professors and develop more personal relationships with them.
She knew when she was 10 years old that she wanted a career in law enforcement. "My grandpa was in law enforcement," she said. "I grew up watching him and knew that I wanted a career where I could help people when they really need it."
Congratulations, Officer Slamer, on all your success in the classroom, on the softball field, and at the police academy. We're thankful you chose A&M-Texarkana and are proud to have you now working alongside us!
