EU Statement – UN General Assembly 3rd Committee: Interactive Dialogue with the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

16 October 2024, New York - European Union Statement at the United Nations General Assembly 79th Session Third Committee Interactive Dialogue with the Chair of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Ms. Laura Craciunean-Tatu

Thank you, Chair!

I have the honor to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.

Ms. Craciunean-Tatu, we are grateful to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for this presentation. We highly value the work of the Committee.

As we move beyond the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it remains crucial to reaffirm that human rights are universal, indivisible and interrelated. It is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made, confront persistent challenges, and continue striving towards a world where the dignity and rights of every individual are fully respected and protected. It is particularly relevant for the right to social security, to education and to decent conditions of work. The legacy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights encourages us not only to celebrate, but also to take action, ensuring that its principles are upheld for everyone, without discrimination. We must remain vigilant in ensuring that human rights are not compromised or sacrificed in the pursuit of other goals. In this perspective, we remain firmly committed to promoting economic, social and cultural rights and ensuring the inclusive participation of persons, including those in vulnerable situations, in line with international human rights obligations under international law and standards and through existing policy and legislative frameworks. These rights should be at center of the second edition of the World Summit for social development, that is to be organized in 2025.

Ms. Craciunean-Tatu,

We have examined the annual report on past sessions, and have three questions:

  1. The Predictable review cycle was introduced in 2022. Could you elaborate on the role and effectiveness of the simplified reporting procedure in facilitating more focused and constructive dialogues with States? Are there any significant challenges or feedback from States regarding its implementation thus far?
  1. Given the ever-changing global landscape, including increasing geopolitical tensions and threats to peace, how does the Committee plan to ensure that States continue to fulfill economic, social, and cultural rights, particularly in conflict zones or in times of international crisis?
  1. How do you plan to contribute to the UN World social summit, to be organized in 2025?

Thank you.
