Four Southern University System students named HBCU Scholars

The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) has named four students within the Southern University System as cohorts of the 2024 HBCU Scholars program.

The students selected include:

• Kennedy Orr, Southern University and A&M College
• Nalone Sumo, Southern University and A&M College
• William J. Gaspard, Southern University Law Center
• Dana M. Bailey, Southern University at New Orleans

The group of HBCU Scholars was selected from a competitive pool of more than 350 applicants. A total of 110 students were selected from 77 different colleges and universities across the nation. Throughout the year, the HBCU scholars will engage in a series of workshops, leadership development programs, and networking events designed to enhance their skills.

In the fall, the students will attend the 2024 HBCU Week National Annual Conference in Philadelphia on Sept. 15-19. During the conference, HBCU Scholars will take part in sessions aimed at fostering innovation, leadership, and both personal and professional growth. Scholars will also have the chance to network with peers, initiative staff, and partners, showcasing their individual and collective talents.

Since the HBCU Scholars program was founded in 2014, it has been committed to recognizing and supporting the brightest and service-oriented minds from HBCUs. Over the past decade, the program has empowered over 500 students, providing them with invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth, mentorship, and networking.
