Defence Minister’s meeting with the US Ambassador to Romania

Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, had a working meeting with the United States Ambassador to Romania, Kathleen Kavalec, on Tuesday, July 16th.

The meeting agenda of the two officials included topics of interest resulting from the NATO Summit in Washington, as well as the current security situation.

During the meeting, the officials reiterated the strategic importance of the Black Sea for the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic space and the need to continue taking a unified and coherent approach to the management of security situations, in accordance with the commitments undertaken within the North Atlantic Alliance.

"Romania has constantly promoted the need to protect the Black Sea region, especially in the current security context. From this perspective, Romania acts to increase the relevance of the region within NATO, by consolidating the allied presence in the Black Sea through an increased mobility", the Romanian official emphasized.

Minister of National Defence presented the assessment of the Romanian party regarding the regional security developments, through the lens of the developments and implications of the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine. Romania's involvement in the multidimensional support provided to Ukraine and our country's determination to continue it were highlighted by the officials.

"At the NATO Summit in Washington, we had the opportunity to reiterate our firm commitment to support Ukraine in the face of Russia's unprovoked and unjustified aggression. Through our involvement, we want to help strengthen Ukraine's defence capability and prove our solidarity with the Ukrainian people. It is essential that all allies join forces to support peace and stability in the region, and the decision of the allies at the Summit is a strong signal in this regard," the Minister of National Defense stated.

Minister Tîlvăr pointed out the importance of the transatlantic cooperation. "Our strategic partnership, joint projects and development perspectives show our joint commitment to Euro-Atlantic security," the minister also emphasized.

Also, the joint commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship was reconfirmed, since the solid partnership with the United States represents one of the main elements of the deterrence and defence posture on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance.
