FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DECEMBER 17, 2024
Warnings will be issued to drivers for 30 days before citations are issued.
Davie, Fla. - The Town of Davie is implementing a School Zone Safety Program to curb speeding in school zones across the Town and protect the safety of children, residents, and school staff.
The new automated traffic safety program is being launched using a phased approach, with seven cameras in the first phase and six to follow in 2025. Speed cameras will begin issuing warnings for anyone caught speeding near our community's schools.
As part of the first phase of the program, cameras are being placed at the locations below:
By law, the Town must provide a 30-day warning/grace period before officially issuing citations. With this new program, warnings will begin on December 18, 2024, while citations will begin on January 17, 2025.
Vehicles found to be traveling over the speed limit which occurs within 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after the start of a regularly scheduled school session will receive a notice in the mail alerting them to their illegal act and reminding them about the importance of staying alert in this location. After the 30-day warning period, the program will begin issuing citations to violators. Fines will be sent to the vehicle's registered owner for $100 within 30 days after a violation. For more information related to the violations, visit https://www.davie-fl.gov/Faq.aspx?TID=50.
The Town of Davie contracted with Verra Mobility, a leader in speed safety technology, to administer this safety program. The cameras will capture images of the vehicle license plates and transmit the potential violation through secure video. Law enforcement will verify the infraction before a fine is issued.
"Speed safety cameras have been proven effective in reducing crashes and pedestrian-related injuries," said Police Chief Stephen Kinsey. "Most importantly, communities that use speed safety cameras consistently report safer roads around their schools. These cameras will act as a force multiplier which allows our Officers to handle other priority calls or conduct traffic enforcement in other areas. This is just one of many tools Davie is employing to reduce speeding and keep our community safe."
