Archaeology Day, Potato Creek State Park

10am - 12Noon - Schrader Springhouse Open House

Stop by any time within the 2-hour timeframe to explore the fascinating history of our park's former inhabitants and learn how these early settlers to the area used natural resources to store their food before refrigeration. After parking at the Porter Rea Cemetery Parking Lot located on the east end of our park, walk on your own about a ½-mile along flat Trail 4 to the Naturalist station set-up at the Schrader Springhouse. The Naturalist will be showcasing artifacts uncovered from the house's reconstruction, will let you see inside the house, and even give you a nice cool treat from the historic refrigeration system thanks to donations from our Friends of Potato Creek.

1pm-3pm - Archaeology Events & Crafts Stations:

Meet an Archaeologist - See first hand what they might observe on their dig sites. Archaeologist from Civil & Environmental Consultants will be on hand to answer questions, demonstrate the tools that they use, and let you try your hand at finding artifacts.

Archaeology Crafts - The Naturalists will guide you in creating a historic craft from your finger tips using natural materials found in our park. You can try your hand at making cordage and your very own clay pinch pots.

Artifacts on Display - Identify and learn about artifacts found within our park.

Atlatl - Try using an atlatl and learn about the challenges of this ancient hunting tool.
