Mandatory evacuations lifted for Piihana Road area; road reopens

EVACUATION

Mandatory evacuations were lifted for Piihana Road area in Wailuku as of approximately 1:10 p.m., according to Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). Voluntary evacuation advisories for nearby Happy Valley and Wailuku Country Estates were lifted as of 12:32 p.m. Door-to-door mandatory evacuations of Piihana Road area were conducted as a precaution by Maui Police Department (MPD) shortly after the Piihana brush fire was reported. The door-to-door evacuations were followed at 10:55 a.m. via Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) for voluntary evacuations. WEA, which broadcasts via phone, TV and radio, is distinct and separate from MEMA alerts and do not require subscriptions.

ROAD REOPENS

Piihana Road in Wailuku reopened at 1:10 p.m., according to Maui Police Department (MPD).

FIRE UPDATE

The Piihana brush fire is 90% contained at approximately four acres, according to Maui Fire Department (MFD). Four fires in the Piihana Farms area were reported at approximately 9:15 a.m., and shortly after the reports, Piihana Road area homes were evacuated by MPD as a precaution.

RESOURCES

Throughout the incident, MFD had six engines, two tankers, fire officials and multiple private tankers responding. Air 1 has been on standby.
