Mosquito and West Nile Protection

West Nile virus is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. It can be dangerous, and people 60 and older are at greatest risk of serious illness.

Important Ways to Protect Against West Nile:

  • Use an EPA-registered insect repellent
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing
  • Avoiding peak mosquito times around dawn and dusk
  • Examine your yard and any outdoor space. Do not leave any standing water like puddles, bird baths, or flower containers, especially small containers that can easily be overlooked. If it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes.

This year, West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes have been found in North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) traps in Niles, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka. While the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time, NSMAD recommends that residents take the above personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites.

Residents should contact the NSMAD for assistance with any mosquito-related issues they may be experiencing. Submit an online service request with NSMAD.
