DG CLIMA participates in China’s national ETS conference

DG CLIMA Head of Unit Ms Mette Quinn, Head of Unit for ETS Policy Coordination and International Carbon Markets and Deputy Director for Carbon Markets and Clean Mobility at the Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) of the European Commission, attended the 2024 China Carbon Market Conference in Wuhan from 20 to 21 July 2024.

In her keynote speech at the opening session of the conference, Ms Mette Quinn spoke about the EU's experience and recent developments of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

She had a bilateral meeting with Deputy Director General Lu Shize of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China to discuss the next concrete steps to implement our cooperation under the Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Cooperation on Emissions Trading signed between the EU and China.

Background information:

On 18 June, adjacent to the EU- China High-Level Environment and Climate Dialogue in Brussels, European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra and Minister of Ecology and Environment of China Huang Runqiu signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Cooperation on Emissions Trading. The EU and China are cooperating closely on ETS, a key and efficient tool to achieve our respective carbon neutrality targets.
