OLLU welcomes 40th Anniversary Hispanas Unidas Conference

OLLU is proud to welcome the 40th Anniversary Hispanas Unidas Conference to campus on Sept. 13 and 14. The very first Hispanas Unidas Conference was convened on the OLLU campus in 1984 making history and bringing together more than 1,000 women to address the status of Hispanic women at that pivotal moment.

"OLLU is proud to host this significant conference," said OLLU President Abel A. Chávez, MBA, PhD. "The university has been the setting and impetus for many significant events and initiatives by and for the Hispanic community. It is only fitting that we welcome the Hispanas Unidas Conference back to our historic campus where it all began."

The 1984 conference spotlighted various critical issues, including public housing, higher education, health, wage equity, and immigration. In 2024, these topics and more will be revisited including evaluating the overall status of Hispanas in San Antonio as a microcosm of the United States.

This year's conference, "Hispanas Unidas 40th Anniversary Reunion and Conference: Raising Our Voices," will feature 87 sessions and over 125 Latina speakers. Former City Councilwoman Maria Berriozabal said: "Latinas have been using their voices for justice and inclusion for themselves, their families, and communities for generations. They have been a significant force for good for our city. At this critical time, when even our planet cries for protection, Latinas' contributions must be recognized, and their voices must be heard for the sake of our city, nation, and planet."

A celebratory reunion on Friday night will bring together the remarkable women who organized the inaugural conference, followed by a full day of inspirational speakers, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities on Saturday.
