BUSHKILL, Pa- Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is preparing for the 60th anniversary of its designation as a national recreation area.
To celebrate this milestone, the park is sponsoring a student art contest in collaboration with Friends of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Peters Valley School of Craft, and Pocono Environmental Education Center. The art contest will open Monday September 16th and submissions will be accepted until Friday November 15th.
The theme of the contest is At the River's Edge. This theme invites students to creatively explore all the connections between living things, time periods, and places that exist because of the Delaware River.
The art contest is open to students in grades 3 through 12 who live within the five counties that make up the park (PA: Monroe, Northampton, Pike and NJ: Sussex, Warren). Art submissions by students under 18 years old must be submitted with a completed entry form signed by a parent or guardian. All submissions must be able to be hung on the wall to be displayed.
The artwork will be judged by a panel and will be scored based on creativity, quality, effort, how well the artwork fits the theme, and the overall impact of the artwork. One first place winner and one runner up will be selected from each age group.
Artwork will be displayed in different sites around the park, such as visitor centers, Pocono Environmental Education Center, and Peters Valley School of Craft. The artwork will be displayed for the duration of 2025.
Winners will be invited to participate in an award ceremony in January. Winners are not required to attend the award ceremony in order to receive their park and/or art-related prizes. Contest winners will be announced in mid-December.
Artwork and entry forms can be mailed into the park, or they can be dropped off during regular business hours at Peters Valley Gallery (19 Kuhn Rd, Layton, NJ 07851) or Pocono Environmental Education Center (538 Emery Road, Dingmans Ferry, PA 18328).
