City Schedule for Independence Day

Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Monday, July 1, 2024 - In observation of the Independence Day holiday, City of Des Moines administration buildings will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2024 and will reopen to the public on Friday, July 5.

There will be no collection of garbage, recycling or yard waste during the holiday. As a result, collection services for Thursday and Friday will be delayed by one day (with Friday collection occurring on Saturday).

Our firefighters, police officers, and park staff ask that you please leave fireworks shows to the professionals this year. Use of fireworks in our parks and neighborhoods is illegal due to the inherent risk of starting a house or grass fire or damaging public facilities, costing taxpayers significant dollars in cleanup and repairs.

The Des Moines Police Department is dedicating resources to a special enforcement team for fireworks complaints over the holiday, with a focus on protecting public facilities like parks and pools that have seen heavy fireworks damage in recent years. Citations for consumer firework use carry a $200 fine, and those that set them off may be liable for paying the costs for any damages.
