On 23 October 2024, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming visited the Kazan Federal University while attending the 16th BRICS Leaders' Meeting in Kazan.

During his visit, the Secretary-General learned about the history of this university, one of the oldest higher education institutions in Russia. Among other things, he discussed the University's plans to expand its relations with SCO universities in other countries, as well as the activities of the Academy of Youth Diplomacy, including the experience of holding the SCO Model at the Kazan Federal University.

Zhang Ming addressed the faculty and students. In his remarks, he outlined the main areas of the SCO's work and its development prospects. He stressed that the organisation attaches great importance to cooperation in education and youth training, expressing his hope that the University students continue to participate in SCO events, thus making a significant contribution not only to the development of the organisation, but also to peace, security and prosperity for the SCO family.

The Secretary-General explored the Kazan Federal University's Museum of History and the audiences where Leo Tolstoy, Vladimir Lenin and other prominent students of the university studied.
