Introducing Our 2024 Texas Supportive Housing Institute Participants

Next month, we will kick-off our fourth Texas Supportive Housing Institute (Institute), and we're thrilled to introduce this year's teams and their proposed communities to house and support our most vulnerable Texans.

Launched in 2020, the Institute is offered in partnership with the Corporation for Supportive Housing. Designed to promote the development of permanent supportive housing (PSH), the Institute provides developers, property managers, and service providers with the training and tools they need to build successful PSH developments in their local communities.

PSH is recognized as one of the most effective housing interventions for serving individuals with persistent health challenges, those experiencing chronic homelessness, and those at-risk of falling into homelessness.

The teams introduced below will go through four months of in-person and virtual training and then present their proposed developments to their fellow cohort members as well as Institute funders and supporters at a February "project reveal" showcase.

The teams are able to participate in the Institute at no cost thanks to the generous support of our funders. We're grateful for the following entities who made this year's Institute happen: Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Dominium, Texas Community Bank, Regions Bank, Insperity, Frost Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, Vecino Group, and Capital Impact Partners.

Brownsville Housing Opportunity Corporation

Operating as an instrument of the Housing Authority of the City of Brownsville, the Brownsville Housing Opportunity Corporation's mission is to increase opportunities for affordable, quality housing, and support self-sufficiency through collaborative partnerships. The organization and their partners are proposing a 50-unit PSH development designed to serve victims of domestic violence and abuse. The community will also provide office space for Friendship of Women, other retail space, and amenities for residents.

Denton Affordable Housing Corporation

Denton Affordable Housing Corporation (DHAC) is a community-focused non-profit devoted to working collaboratively to increase the supply of affordable housing and provide supportive services for underserved residents across Denton County. DHAC has extensive housing development and service provision experience and will expand upon this expertise to develop a 130-unit PSH community that will serve Veterans, single parents, transition aged youth, persons with disabilities, frequent users of emergency systems, vulnerable persons, and those experiencing chronic homelessness.

Housing Crisis Center (Dallas)

Soon to be renamed Home Point, the Housing Crisis Center's vision is to create a world where the homeless and nearly homeless are not just housed but also embraced by a network of care and support that transcends the physical walls of shelter, firmly rooted in the belief that restoring dignity to those facing their darkest hours uplifts the entire community. This team intends to develop a 24-unit PSH community for seniors at-risk of or experiencing homelessness that features ample amenity space for its residents.

SAMMinistries (San Antonio)

Founded more than 40 years ago, SAMMinistries is an interfaith ministry whose mission is to help the homeless and those at-risk of becoming homeless attain self-sufficiency by offering, with dignity and compassion, shelter, housing, and services. The organization will be developing The Commons at Acequia Trails which will consist of 210 newly constructed apartments for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

The community within Brooks City Base, a sprawling campus that is home to more than 50 businesses and 5,300 employees and provides easy access to public transportation, grocery stores, parks, health care, and numerous options for social and recreational activities. The development will include a mix of studio and one-bedroom units and will have its own supportive service facility with medical and dental clinics, client accessible workspace for the case management team, community activity spaces, a park, and other amenities to support the resident wellness and connection.

Tracy Andrus Foundation (Marshall)

The Tracy Andrus Foundation has been serving those experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable populations for the past 12 years. By providing low barrier housing, emergency assistance, food, clothing, education, and an array of other services, the organization follows its mission of serving anyone who is in need. They intend to develop 50 PSH units (both new and rehabilitated) across multiple sites that will serve those experiencing chronic homelessness, frequent users of emergency systems, Veterans, single parents, transition aged youth, and other vulnerable persons.

Vecino Group + Family Eldercare (Austin)

With developments that span across the country, the Vecino Group is an industry leader in providing PSH as they firmly believe that supportive housing is the solution to ending homelessness. They're joined by Family Eldercare who thoughtfully partners with "older adults and people with disabilities to create stability, dignity and well-being." These two entities will develop Cairn Point Montopolis, a 150-unit senior community featuring 65 units of integrated PSH, 15 of which will be set aside for Veterans at-risk of or experiencing homelessness.
