NSPE Joins Forces to Tackle Engineering Workforce Shortage Crisis

NSPE Becomes a Key Partner in the Engineering Workforce Consortium to Drive Recruitment, Retention, and Future Talent Development

To address the critical shortage of skilled professionals in infrastructure development, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has joined with top engineering and public works associations to launch the Engineering Workforce Consortium (EWC). This initiative unites leaders in the profession to craft strategies that attract, retain, and nurture the next generation of engineers and public works professionals, advancing NSPE's mission to strengthen the engineering profession.

NSPE's participation in the Engineering Workforce Consortium builds upon a landmark workforce summit that brought together key partners, including the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The formation of the EWC signals a unified effort among professional societies, trade associations, and academic institutions to address the challenges facing the engineering workforce and to ensure the growth and sustainability of the profession.

"The talent shortage in engineering is a national concern, and NSPE is proud to join the Engineering Workforce Consortium to help lead the way in solving this crisis," said NSPE President Brian Malm, P.E., F.NSPE. "By collaborating with leading organizations, we can create impactful initiatives to attract the next generation of engineering talent, support current professionals, and ensure the long-term sustainability of our infrastructure projects. Together, we will shape the future of the engineering profession and strengthen our nation's capacity to meet evolving demands."

The EWC's mission is built around three key objectives:

  1. Attracting the next generation of engineering talent;
  2. Retaining the existing workforce in engineering and public works; and
  3. Advocating for industry growth and sustainability.

NSPE's involvement underscores its commitment to developing innovative solutions to these workforce challenges, positioning the organization at the forefront of efforts to not only meet today's needs but also to secure the future of the profession.

With a focus on collaboration, innovation, and advocacy, the Engineering Workforce Consortium is a pivotal step toward fortifying the engineering and public works sectors for the future. Together, NSPE and other industry leaders are committed to nurturing talent, retaining expertise, and driving growth in STEM careers to meet the evolving demands of infrastructure development.
