Bismarck State College announces its 2025 BookTalk at BSC series

Published: Dec 02 2024
Beginning in January, the Bismarck State College (BSC) Library will host its annual BookTalk at BSC book discussion series, exploring an "Unmoored" theme this year. The discussions are free and open to the public and take place on Sundays in January, February, and March at the BSC Library.

This year's theme explores stories of migration, resilience and transformation through three acclaimed novels.

Dr. Kim Crowley, BSC associate professor of English, starts the series on Sunday, Jan. 5, with "American Dirt" by Jeanine Cummins. This gripping novel explores the harrowing journey of a mother and son fleeing cartel violence in Mexico in search of safety in the United States.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, BookTalk at BSC continues with a discussion on "The Beekeeper of Aleppo: A Novel" by Christy Lefteri. This moving story portrays a Syrian couple's escape from war-torn Aleppo and their journey through trauma, love and resilience as they seek refuge in Europe. Dr. Brian Palecek, retired United Tribes Technical College English and humanities instructor, will guide conversations.

The final discussion wraps up the series on Sunday, March 2, featuring "Exit West: A Novel" by Mohsin Hamid. Michael Tomanek, associate professor of English at BSC, will lead the exploration of this evocative tale of two lovers navigating a world transformed by migration, where mysterious doors provide both escape and peril.

All discussions are held from 1 to 3 p.m. in Skogen Hall, Room 204, inside the BSC Library, 1400 Schafer Street. Participants are encouraged to read the books ahead of each discussion. Copies are available for purchase at local bookstores, through online retailers, or for borrowing at the BSC Library or area public libraries.

BookTalk at BSC is funded by the BSC Library and the Warren and Rose Marie Henke Memorial Library Endowment. For more information, contact the BSC Library at 701-224-5450 or [email protected].
