Community members are invited to pen letters of appreciation that will be part of a community art project designed to embody how ordinary people can counteract injustice.
The letter-writing campaign is part of a Mission Viejo Library grant-funded project "Ordinary Voices, Extraordinary Impact " that also features an exhibit and author event.
To kick off the letter-writing campaign, community members are encouraged to check out an exhibit depicting the Japanese American internment during World War II as recounted in letters from young internees to San Diego librarian Clara Breed. The exhibit will be on display at the Mission Viejo Library through late January. Reflecting on the experiences captured in those letters, the community is invited to write about personal encounters with injustice and the positive impacts of their fellow citizens.
A local artist will add those letters to a large-scale collage that will be installed in the Mission Viejo Library next spring.
To submit letters, participants are asked to pen a note of gratitude to someone who has had a positive impact on them. Folks (aged 10 and older residing in Orange County) can write the letter at home or visit the Mission Viejo Library for letter-writing supplies. (See these sampleletters for inspiration.)
Letters must be submitted by Friday, February 21 to the library's information desk at 100 Civic Center.
